The Andromeda Evolution
by Daniel H. Wilson
This book is a sequel to this Andromeda Strain. The scientists working to stop the spread of the deadly Adromeda Strain suceeded. What appeared was a mutant strain that was not deadly. In spite of this, they developed Project Vigilance in order to continue to watch for the deadly Andromida Strain to reappear. After many years the Earth scientists were satisfied that the project could be shut down. However, a mapping drone discovers a strange alien occurance in a remote spot in the Amazon jungle. The signature of this event was the similar to the deadly, alien microparticle.
The revitalized Project Wildfire activates a team of scientists to go though the Amazon and investigate the strange anomaly, which could be an apocalyptic threat. The team has trouble reaching the quarantine zone, and this raises the threat of world wide distruction. Meanwhile an international space station is in orbit and has centered itself over the swiftly exanding alien infection. The main scientist however, has her own plan for the Andromeda mutation.
This is an exciting hardscience fiction that also weaves in touching moments, betrayal and imminent destruction of the Earth. I liked because it was faced paced and had very interesting characters with unique motivations.
